Queens Speech confirms the need to improve EV infrastructure
In the Queens speech today (21 June 2017) the government has pledged to make the UK a ‘world leader’ in electric vehicles. They are to encourage installation of charge points at motorway services and petrol stations.
“Legislation will be introduced to ensure the United Kingdom remains a world leader in new industries, including electric cars and commercial satellites”
STRATEGY FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES
They plan to bring in an ‘Automated and Electric Vehicles Bill’. This will ensure the UK retains it’s position as a global leader in the market for electric vehicles.
James Court, head of policy and external affairs at the Renewable Energy Association, stated: “We welcome the Government’s continued ambition to be global leaders in the electric vehicle industry. The proposed Automated and Electric Vehicle Bill will support the development of a more universal strategic charging infrastructure across the country which will help to accelerate the adoption of these new vehicles.”
POSITIVE STEPS FOR THE INDUSTRY
Background documents are suggesting that new legislation will allow the government to require the installation of charge points for electric vehicles at motorway services and petrol stations. Further legislation will then ensure a common technical and operational standard for their use.
